Motion and presence detection
Alerts when there is movement in a home that should be empty, or confirms someone has arrived. The most mature application. Comcast began rolling it out in August 2026 on XB7 and newer gateways, as part of Xfinity Shield, at no extra cost. Plume has offered sensing to operators since 2020.

Automation and energy efficiency
Smart bulbs from brands such as Wiz and Philips Hue already use their own Wi-Fi radio to sense presence and switch lights on or off. The same principle can adjust heating and cooling to occupancy.
Pilot
Aging in place
Following the activity pattern of someone who lives alone and alerting family members to unusual inactivity or a changed routine. Operators point to this as the next step. Fall detection still has error rates that call for caution.
Pilot
Occupancy and flow
Estimating how many people are in rooms, shops, residential buildings and venues, combining device-free sensing with passive device observation. Useful for staffing, cleaning and climate control.
Pilot
Security add-on
An extra layer for alarms, without cameras. It does not replace a monitored security system: Comcast itself treats it as a feature, not a security service.

Vital signs
Breathing and heart rate have been measured with CSI, but under controlled conditions: a still person, close to the link, in a stable room. Still far from clinical or commercial use.
Research
Gestures and activities
Recognizing gestures, telling sitting from lying down, identifying activities. Promising lab results that struggle to generalize to new rooms and people.
Research
Device-free localization
Knowing where in the room a person is without them carrying anything. 802.11bf at millimeter-wave frequencies opens the way to finer spatial resolution.
